I was obsessed with metrics when I started YouTube.

I remember sitting in front of my computer, staring at the analytics dashboard for hours.

I would refresh the page every few minutes, hoping to see an increase in views or subscribers.

I would compare my performance to other creators and beat myself up for not measuring up.

It made me feel anxious, stressed and unfulfilled.

I learned that obsessing over metrics is not sustainable and leads to burnout and lack of creativity.

Analyzing metrics is important for iteration and improvement.

However, if you don’t set realistic goals and take breaks from tracking metrics, you risk losing sight of why you started creating content in the first place.

Use the following three ideas to help maintain a healthy mindset.

#1. Set realistic goals and focus on growth.

Setting realistic goals helps you stay focused and motivated. Instead of obsessing over metrics, focus simply on growth. Even if it’s just a 1% improvement. That is success.

  • Define your goals and break them down into smaller milestones

  • Track your progress and adjust your goals accordingly

  • Celebrate your successes and learn from your failures

#2. Use metrics as a guide, not the end-all-be-all.

Metrics are helpful tools, but they don’t tell the whole story. Don’t base your success solely on numbers. Use metrics to identify trends and areas for improvement.

  • Analyze your metrics on a regular basis, but don’t obsess over them

  • Look for patterns and identify what’s working and what’s not

  • Experiment with different types of content and measure their impact on your metrics

#3. Take breaks and prioritize self-care.

Taking breaks and prioritizing self-care is essential for maintaining your mental health and creativity as a creator.

  • Schedule time for breaks and relaxation

  • Engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment outside of content creation

  • Self reflect on your actions within your business to help manage stress and expectations

Metrics are just one aspect of creating content and they don’t define your worth.

I’m a big believer in balance in all things.

Always strive for improvement, but don’t have unrealistic expectations.

P.S. I still sometimes get stressed over metrics. I try to take certain days where I don’t even look at YouTube metrics whatsoever.
